Week 4

What we've learned about this term.....

Rongoa (Maori Medicine using plants/trees)

Kawakawa - helping stomach pains, making steam baths
Kowhai - paste used on cuts, open wounds
Harakeke - splint for broken bones,  pulp used on infections, fibres used as stitches
Rangiora - used as a bandage

Report writing - this term we are learning how to write reports.  The first thing we need to do is research correctly.

 Research procedure
    - identifying the topic
    - finding a source of information
    - skimming, scanning and close reading
    - noting the new information

To practice this procedure we have been researching the types of forests in N.Z.  We used the Kids Conservation website and made notes in our own words.  Here's an example from George and Matthew:

Types Of Forest
We have two main types of forest in New Zealand - Beech forest and Podocarp/Broadleaf forest.
Beech Forest
  • Largest forests
  • Most spared or cut down
  • Often grow on steep mountains
  • There are 5 different types - Red,Black,Silver,Mountain and Hard
  • Not many plants or vines underneath the beech trees

Podocarp/Broadleaf
  • They've been around since the dinosaur ages
  • One of the largest trees in our forests
  • Broadleaf trees are not conifers, beech or podocarp.
  • Similar to tropical rainforests.
